Jubilee reflections

Spare a thought for the England of old

When summers were warm and winters were cold

When we looked after the land and the seas

And nurtured the birds and the millions of bees

Imagine a picture painted through time

Watching the hedgerows slowly decline

Urbanisation steeling the land

Mass agriculture vented by man

We have the power to bring back from the brink

Hedgehogs and turtle doves almost extinct

And is the story of one little treasure

That we thought had been lost for ever

A story of joy, happily ever after

Or actually a story of climate disaster

In 70 years the Queen has seen

Far from Englands pleasant green

A dull grey take over from east to west

From north to south and all the rest

The golden corn no longer waving

Birds on farmland almost halving

And gardens colourful, free from disease

No longer a pleasure park for our bees

But as I sit and share the Downs

Above this most gentle friendly town

I wonder what has passed Elizabeth by

Not just the dainty damselfly
