Reservoir lament

No rains came

A drought

Said the water company

And we banished our hosepipes

Emptied our bathwater onto flowerbeds

And showered instead

But summer sneaked away

And Autumn bought us rainy days

The rain relentless

Waterlogged our gardens

Filled our drains

contaminated our rivers

Our seas

So much rain we all said

That’s us set for the summer ahead

Lush gardens and healthy crops

Only then did the rain stop

And another summer gave us barmy days

And beautiful flowers and fields of maize

And the water companies said stop

Watering your gardens and your crops

There’s not enough water they said

We didn’t store the winter rains

We let it mix with poo and sent it down the drain

Water water everywhere from too much winter rain

But each summer repeats the hosepipe ban again

Save the rain!
