On a crisp November morning, I was walking to meet my friend when I saw this queue and an A board that said community fridge. A fridge I ask myself. A fridge for the community. Does it save electricity. What can it be? Something for free? So I join the queue and I’m glad that I’ve got a bag in my pocket because everybody is carrying bags.
And at 10 o’clock we start moving and I find myself inside of a Community Fridge? Yeah cold you think it would be, but no, it was a room full of food.
You see supermarkets make too much fresh food and then they throw it away but people drive all around the country to pick it up and then give it away. No, empty shelves won’t do at the end of the day. They’d rather throw away. What the fuck, what the fuck is going on.
Bags and bags of salad that’s reached its use by date. They’re not even allowed to give that away so the salad becomes compost and the plastic lives to fight another day. Fuck health and safety. What about personal responsibility? Let people choose whether they want to eat it if it looks a bit manky. Let the supermarkets open their doors at the end of the day and give it away.
How much does food waste cost for a year ? Driven by profits, supermarket gain, but half the world is starving and gluttony remains. So just tell me that again..
This fridge is for people to pick up free food. Its food would be wasted because the supermarkets make too much and volunteers drive all around to pick up the food to avoid chaos if the supermarkets gave food away at the end of the day .
Stand up to corporate greed. We’ve got a whole world to feed and we’re chucking away food or giving it away because we make too much so their pretty little shelves can look well stocked with more food and greed than anybody, than any country needs
Well I picked up a loaf and a croissant for Ron and went home thinking fuck capitalism let’s move on. Let’s move onto a place where life is fair to us all where we eat local food and don’t waste it at all.
