Christmas

We’d just sat down to watch the king

When we heard a knock on the door

There was plenty of food left over

For whoever had come to call

So I opened the door with a joyful smile

And the cold chilly air pounded in

But there wasn’t anyone standing there

Just a tiny shiny metal tin

I said to my 4 grandchildren

Was this you, you, you or you

And they laughed and said not us

In a terrible hullabaloo

Was this a present from hubby?

A joke from the kids or my mum

I laughed as I lifted it in

And thought it was fabulous fun

But “no” they said, wasn’t us

Open it, see what’s inside

And I rushed it rather too quickly

And the tin fell onto its side

And music and laughter filled our room

And a thundering deafening din

Came from the little tin on its side

What on earth was within?

I touched it gently and spoke to it then

“Dear tin have you a Christmas surprise?”

And a sparkly fairy flew from the gap

And twinkled her glittery eyes

What one wish would you have on this day?

Anything anything dear

And I looked around at my family

And I felt most dreadfully queer

Would I wish for more presents

More money, more fun

Or a fabulous holiday

For everyone?

Would I wish for world peace

For peace in Ukraine

Or a healthy planet

Where nature thrived again?

But as my brain was thinking

Of the power ahead

I thought it was Christmas

And did this instead

I wished that all children

Had a fairy in bed

Who could make them happy

If they were sad in their head

And as soon as I wished

4 fairies left the tin

And I sat back down to dinner

With a very happy grin
