Panic on the slopes

So there I was

Pounding up a snow clad hillside
Deep snow
Steep hill
Pride in my heart and fitness
Carrying a bag in each hand
Until

It was the same sort of feeling that I had that day on Lords Rake
When I froze half way up and Godfrey had to hit me hard from below
On my bum
To make me go
I was all for calling mountain rescue
That day
But today I was only 20 yards above the village
Exposed

I stopped because I looked up and thought
“Wow that looks steep, I should have put my snowshoes on”
I froze because I looked down and thought
“Did I come up there, it’s almost sheer”?

But I composed
I put down my bags
Balanced on one leg at a time
To put grippers on my shoes
And made my way down the mountain

Like a 3-legged octopus
No poise or finesse
Just very glad to get down!
